Contrary to popular belief, the groom has a few more duties to perform other than to just show up on time. Below is a list of some of the traditional duties that all lowcountry grooms share.

  1. Finding the Perfect Engagement Ring and Wedding Bands: Remember, these are the rings that you and your true love will wear for the rest of your lives, which makes it very important that you put your all in it. If you have a bride who is more particular about her rings, then you may want to ask if she would like to come with you to help pick the rings out.
  2. Choosing Your Wedding Party (Best Man, Groomsmen, and Ushers): This can be either one of the most easiest or hardest jobs for you, depending on if you have multiple close friends and family or not. If you are having trouble choosing, then try to pick based on how helpful your potential groomsmen are going to be. The wedding planning and the wedding day itself is going to be full of stress and excitement. You will be very grateful to have groomsmen who will keep you calm and on schedule compared to some of your more lets party all not long friends.
  3. Selecting a Gift for the Bride: Pick a gift that your bride is going to love and cherish for the rest of her life. It is your wedding day after all and you are going to want to remember every detail afterward.
  4. Compiling the Groom’s Guest List: This is your side of the family and your bride will not know who all to invite. If you are unsure of who to invite, then reach out to your parents and ask them to help.
  5. Planning the Honeymoon: Be sure to pick a location that not only you will love, but also your bride!
  6. Planning for and Purchasing the Marriage License: Don’t forget that there is paper work involved in becoming legally married.
  7. Standing in the Receiving Line with Your Bride: Some of your guests have come a long way to be at your marriage ceremony so be sure to greet all of your guests at the reception. It is a simple gesture that everyone will appreciate!
  8. Making and Responding to Toasts: You may want to spend some time on what you will say for your toast and how you want to respond to those making toasts. The last thing you will want to do is to draw a blank while everyone is look at you.
  9. Dancing: At the reception it is your duty to do the first dance with your bride, followed by dancing with the respective mothers and the maid of honor. If you do not know how to dance, then now is the time to start learning before your wedding day!
  10. Cutting the Cake with Your Bride: You may want to talk with your bride beforehand if you are both actually going to gently feed each other a piece of cake, or if you both are going to smear on it each other’s faces. This is because some brides may not want to have cake on their face on their wedding day.
