The boutonnière is both a beautiful visual and emotional symbol of the groom’s love for his bride. Unfortunately, men only wear a boutonnière for a couple of times in their life, which means they may not know how to properly wear a boutonnière.
To begin the boutonnière is always worn on the left lapel, over the groom’s heart, of the groom’s jacket. It should be placed in the lapel’s button-hole, a 1 to 1.5-inch opening. If the groom has purchased a higher end suit then you will see a lapel button hole specifically designed with a latch and built the enough strength to support a boutonnière.
If the groom has not purchased a suit with no lapel button hole, then modifications will need to be made to the lapel. To start, a strong inner lining will need to be hand sewn into the jacket. Then a buttonhole will need to be cut and stitched in. Lastly, a latch will have to be sewn 1-2 inches under the lapel button hole.
If you do not have the time and money to add a custom lapel button hole, then have no fear! There is an alternative. The groom can simply pin the boutonniere to their lapel. If you choose this method, then be sure to ask your florist to customize the stem of boutonniere to look attractive.
Lastly, once the groom has the boutonniere on, make sure to wear it with confidence!
